Meditation Retreat

Inner Peace Meditation Retreat “There is a time for everything,” the old adage says. And that cannot be more true than when it comes to the care of our being.

There is time for us to be active and do all the things that the material world requires of us. There is a time for our professional life, family life, personal life, hobbies etc. And how much time do we dedicate to our well-being, our inner well-being?

Mediation in general, and meditation retreats even more, are the perfect way to help us rebalance, restore and reclaim our well-being on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level. Dedicating time to this practice is the perfect antidote to stress, confusion, dissatisfaction and unhappiness.

Join us for a day-long retreat dedicate to finding deep and lasting inner peace and nourishing the qualities within us that can help us support our entire being on a daily basis.

This is a great opportunity to enhance an existing meditation practice or gain the support to begin one, and rediscover our inner peace. Register today, space is limited.

The Benefits of Eating Well

Mar 11, 2015   //   Nutrition  //  Comments Off on The Benefits of Eating Well

by Kasin Anton

Nutrition can become confusing as one day we are told to follow the USDA Food Plate (formally known as the Food Pyramid), on another we are told to eat Paleo or vegetarian, and on yet another we are told to eat everything but in moderation. So which is it?

This is the golden question! I specifically chose the field of Holistic Nutrition as I believe nutrition must be personalized as each person’s needs are different based on age, exercise levels, disease state, stress, environment, genes, health goals, and so much more.

On the most basic level, everyone benefits the most from focusing on whole, nutrient dense, organic (where possible), and diverse foods. Too often we forget how powerful food choices are as foods can either harm or heal us physically and mentally in regards to disease progression and overall health.

While eating whole foods seems obvious, most Americans heavily rely on processed foods. These foods are commonly touted as “nutritious,” as they are made from “whole grains,” fortified, low fat, low carb, or are “kid approved.” While these foods are successfully marketed, they rob the body of nutrients at a faster rate, cause blood sugar imbalances, increase hunger, and often result in weight gain as well as a host of other negative consequences.

In contrast when focusing on eating whole foods, the body knows how to incorporate and utilize nutrients optimally, will provide correct feedback as to when to stop eating, and will lead to increased vitality both physically and mentally.

Ironically, when as a society we began focusing on packaged foods in order to create low fat items and, thus, seemingly healthier foods that would help us to lose weight, we began the obesity epidemic as a nation.

Commonly I hear, “I know which foods are healthy, but the packaged foods just taste so good!” Committing to changing habits and staying accountable are the most important and yet most difficult aspects as these foods are very addictive. However, cutting out processed foods and focusing on whole nutritious meals can lead you to experience numerous personal benefits. In the long term you’ll benefit from potentially lower healthcare costs in the future as well as longevity and vitality, and in the short term whole foods lead to increased energy, improved sleep, stable moods, weight loss, improved regularity, and a host of other rewards.

It may appear more costly to purchase whole foods and many people complain about how quickly the food goes bad, but on the most basic level why would anyone want to eat something that is scientifically designed to not rot? Everything that grows should at some point decompose. While this can feel annoying when you reach in the crisper drawer and realize you forgot about the lettuce you bought last week, it is actually a good reminder that good nutritious food should and does not last forever.

Meditation at the Gym?

Jul 27, 2014   //   Blog, Meditation  //  Comments Off on Meditation at the Gym?

meditationAbsolutely yes! It is finally time to break through old assumption about mediation being reserved for monks, nuns and “spiritual” people confined to monasteries, ashrams or meditation centers.

Meditation is a practice open to anyone interested in receiving its numerous benefits from spiritual exploration and opening (the actual origins and intent of the practice), to the currently more widely recognized benefits such as stress reduction and improved relaxation.

Science & Meditation

Due to scientifically measurable changes in biological, neurological and physiological functions, meditation is receiving long overdue credit as an essential element for achieving and maintaining a balanced, healthy lifestyle. Some of the major benefits of mediation include lowering blood pressure, stress responses, reactivity, anxiety and cholesterol levels.

On the other hand, mediation increases immune function, metabolic efficiency, sleep cycle and relaxation, cardio vascular health, memory, creativity, cognitive abilities, calmness and general quality of life. Additionally, longtime meditators have been found to have greater development and function of the pre-frontal cortex, the anterior part of the brain related to decision-making.

For us at In Forma, the recognition of meditation as a fundamental aspect of wellbeing has been an essential element of our integral approach to health and fitness since the very beginning. Over the years, different types of meditative approaches to health have been introduced by some our instructors in yoga, integral fitness and Pilates classes. However, since the beginning of the year, we have taken an even more progressive approach and introduced a “stand alone” meditation class.

Monday Meditations

Under the care of Andrea Colombu, In Forma owner and longtime mediator and teacher, In Forma now offers a meditation class every Monday night from 7:00 – 8:15. Living Radiance: Meditation for Wellness and Inner Peace focuses primarily on the introduction and use of Mindfulness Meditation but also draws from Andrea’s wide experience in other meditative practices like Zen and Dzogchen.

The class is open to anyone, from beginners to more experienced mediators, and extends from the very basics of meditation practice to more elaborate nuance.

The class is also innovatively offered on a donation basis, or dana (pronounced “dah-na”, a Pali word meaning generosity). Generosity is an important aspect of meditation practice as it reveals the interrelationship between teacher and students and allows them to generously offer to each other the priceless value of the practice.

Please join us on Monday nights whether you are interested in beginning a meditation practice or are already a meditator looking for a group or a way to continue expanding and nourishing your practice, all are welcome!

In Forma Staff Honored for Saving a Life

Jun 4, 2014   //   Staff Spotlight  //  1 Comment

Allison Schneider, Barry Schneider and Julie GaviganWe are so proud and thankful for the prompt, careful, and very well administered CPR intervention by Barry and Allison Schneider (the father daughter pair have been working with us at In Forma as Trainer/Operation Manager and Front Desk Coordinator respectively), and Julie Gavigan (Front Desk Assistant) who a few weeks ago helped save the life of one of our long-time members during a personal training session with Trainer Steve Berryhill who also intervened promptly to assist the client.

Their effort didn’t go unnoticed by us here at In Forma, by the family of the survivor or by the MOFD which is honoring their effort with a special ceremony this evening at 7pm in the Orinda Library Auditorium.

When interviewed for the Lamorinda Weekly, Barry recalled the events of that dramatic afternoon:

“Allison and I both looked at each other and started team CPR. I started [chest] massage and Allison started [rescue] breathing.” This was not an experience likely to leave anyone with “a warm fuzzy feeling,” Schneider explained. Still, “everybody was completely engaged and doing exactly what they should be doing,” he said.

We are happy to report that the victim is recovering after some time in the hospital and has no apparent functional or memory loss.

Read the full Lamorinda Weekly article here. We also encourage everyone to learn CPR, you never know when you may be able to save a life.
